Math Flash Card Organization

I spent last Christmas break organizing my addition and subtraction flash cards. Well in the picture above you can see it was a big time mess again. So, I'm trying a different strategy this time. Hopefully I won't be in this situation next year!

Once I finally got the cards sorted, I used my hole puncher and then used my book rings to hold them together. See final images for my result.

I plan to have my upper level students pair with my strugglers after Christmas. I still have some kiddos who need to get their basic facts memorized.

I just wanted to share an amazing math website I just found tonight for all grade levels that is categorized into Common Core standards. I look forward to using it with my second graders. You can find it here: at Adapted Mind http://www.adaptedmind.com/gradelist.php. Students earn badges as they progress. You can purchase a membership, but I was able to get on without a membership and start working problems. I know if you are like me you are evaluating your midyear testing results and seeing what you have covered and not covered thus far. It gets overwhelming trying to meet the needs of such diverse learners in one classroom.

Another great math website is Tenmarks.com. You definitely can get a lot without purchasing with this site. You are allowed to create your class roster and assign class standards to work on as well as individual. Students can work at home and at school with their own password.

Okay...one more great website for the Common Core math standards: http://www.k-5mathteachingresources.com/. This site has so many games that you can print and make that go right with bridging the gap in our standards. It is amazing and the games are easy to create by printing, putting into a page protector, adding dice, counters, etc. of stuff you probably already have in your math kit.

Hope you enjoy!
Our Celebrate Second Grade Classroom Decor

Well, I didn't get to paint my classroom the first summer, but my dear sweet hubby helped me this past summer. We painted late at night because he has a business and I help him in my spare time. It took several long nights and lots of country songs later, but we managed to get it taken care of the week before the kiddos arrived. I chose to go with 2 colors and they make me happy when I walk in the room, so maybe I did something right.
I wanted something on the wall that showcased inspiring words. My goal...leader in me style...I guess it has taken hold of my brain....is to display quotes throughout my classroom. I have a Cricut and I use sticky vinyl to print so that I can paste on the wall easily. I have printed a ton for our school. My room has taken a back burner until now. There's just not enough hours in the day. I guess I need to set an action plan!
I had a Reader Leaders Bulletin Board last year for my students' reading goals, but I decided to change it up this year to display challenge words under the alphabet letters this year. Thanks goes to my wonderful mom! She helped me keep these circles straight. I created the circles and letters on my Cricut with scrapbooking paper.

Our Leader in Me Mission Statement

Well better late than never I guess!! I know it is almost halfway through the year, and I am just now posting my beginning of the year festivities. Our school began the Leader in Me journey last year. We have made so much progress in this area at our school from painting the walls in the hall, bathrooms, and even outdoor areas. We put up quotes, painted our classrooms, and brainstormed ways to give our students the tools to become leaders in every avenue of school and home life. We are really trying to bridge the gap with these kiddos.

I'm going to show you the outside first. I'll do my best to give you a peak inside in tomorrow's post. I had each student do their mission statement for the year, and I posted a small picture and their ideas for making themselves and our classroom better this year. I will leave it up the entire year as a reminder of their goals. As a 7 Habits or Leader in Me School, this is one thing that is suggested for each student in the school. It is important to set goals and to look back to see if they have been attained.
A Social Studies Unit in Second Grade

In second grade, we study geographic regions. This year I decided to tackle this unit in the first part of the year. I introduced the unit with the desert region. I gave students clues to what we would be studying through my backpack and suitcase attire. They noticed the backpack and suitcase early in the day and all I would tell them was that we would be taking a little field trip later in the day. So, when I finally took out the bags, they were beside themselves with excitement. I pulled out sunscreen, sunglasses, lip balm, hiking shoes, a long sleeve shirt, a compass, a flashlight, etc. Each time I pulled something, I had them guess where they thought I could be going in the world. By the end, they finally guessed "The Desert!"

I used one of my bulletin board to display information as we studied jobs, history, what was common in the region, and where on the map each region is located. The students enjoyed researching information on the Internet and discussing the similarities and huge differences in each region.

This unit would be a great one to use as a coming back from Christmas unit to get the kids excited about learning again!
Classroom Ornaments at Christmas time is one of my favorite activities to do with my kiddos. If you are like me your teacher mind is starting to think about what you are gonna be having your kids do at school for this Christmas season. I pulled up a couple of easy to do ornaments my kids have enjoyed in the past.

What I love about this classroom Christmas reindeer craft is the easy to find materials: small ribbon, googly eyes, a tiny drop of red paint, brown paint, craft glue, and puzzle pieces!

Every October, I try to plan an owl pellet investigation for my 2nd graders. This year, I actually got to use owl pellets from our area. My sweet sister-in-law has a real live owl who lives in a tree at her house. My sweet niece and sister-in-law picked them up for me a few months back and I froze them until October. I wasn't for sure they would hold up, but they did just fine.
What's in your Teacher Toolbox? What must I have to organize my day in second grade? Well, I'm gonna tell ya now! This is a list of items I need to do a good job along with how I use them.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Top Tools of my trade:

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">1) Chart Paper for anchor charts and number talks

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">2) SMART Board for reading lessons, math lessons, and just about everything in between. This could be my number 1 tool. By the way, I have a little decorating tip too to accent your SMART Board. Add border to it to highlight it and give it a more interesting frame. Just a little tip for your classroom decor!

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">3) Sharpie Markers that won't bleed through chart paper (I'm now down to 2 colors. Evidently the classroom ghost has been in again. At least that's who I'm claiming takes over when my scatterbrain starts!

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">4) Expo Markers - Gotta have an abundance of these for small group and whole group instruction for sure in reading and math with marker boards and math games!

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">5) Folders - 3 sets for future planning - This is one of my best organization implementations yet!

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">6) Post-it notes - for student interaction with charts

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">7) Index cards - for recording trouble words

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">8) Construction paper - great mat for writing, adds color to a lesson instead of plain old white notebook paper
On Friday we celebrated dental health month with some dental health activites. Students learned about the different parts of a tooth and labeled a diagram. They discussed and wrote about how to take care of their teeth. Students' favorite part of their dental study was getting to make their own mouth full of teeth. Students also solved math word problems about teeth. My student teacher brought in all the supplies: pink plates and small marshmallows. The students had a ball. My favorite was one of my sweet little boys that had to create a mouth just like his with a couple of spaces of missing teeth!
This last chart was my favorite lesson. She created a display on our classroom door of the different heights of penguins and let each student come to the door to measure and see if they were taller, shorter, or the same height as the Emperor Penguin. The kiddos loved the activity and getting to interact with this lesson. It was very interesting to watch students. Some were able to easily use their straws paperclips and cutouts to create a balanced mobile. Others quickly became frustrated if things didn't go according to their plan. I still believe hands-on learning is one of the best ways for students to learn and make sense of their own learning!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16211054124758491482noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3591387286346503702.post-11611539188191290372013-02-10T19:25:00.000-06:002013-02-10T19:25:43.194-06:00Second Grade Music Lessons

Music lessons for second grade: My kiddos have enjoyed studying about the different categories of music. I think the percussion family was probably their favorite. As we studied the different families, I posted the different families on four different pieces of chart paper. This was used throughout our music lessons as a reference source. Students were then able to refer to the anchor charts throughout our study. I found the pictures and information online. Also, since our reading story was Ah, Music, we used websites that I have here at Celebrate Second Grade as one of our reading rotations. Students enjoyed exploring these music websites during their reading station time! Just scroll down to the music section to find the websites we used! Students also enjoyed getting to incorporate real music into our day as we danced to some songs I have saved to my Pinterest board titled Brain Breaks.

Well, I am going to rewind the week and show you what kinds of things I encountered in teaching this week and the kinds of strategies I incorporated into my subjects. We worked on adjective review, music fun, balancing experiments, and identifying numbers to 1,000 in expanded form and adding and taking away from the hundreds and tens place.

Language Strategy for Adjectives: Well, thanks to our adjective dress up show, students seem to get the concept of what an adjective is. Once students watched classmates present their costume, they started calling out so many adjectives that it was hard for me to keep up. This week we focused on using adjectives tell how many with exact numbers and with words such as many, some, a few, etc.

Reading Strategy: We used reference sources to identify ways to find information. Students took notes in their writing journals and identified the latest and greatest sources like I-pads, various tablet devices, and of course the Internet. I wasn't surprised that they even identified Google as a great source of information. They learned that you can search for just about any kind of information when we did animal reports a few weeks ago and did our research in the computer lab. I also introduced them to the age old Thesaurus, the outdated encyclopedia book we all grew up with, a dictionary, and an atlas. We had a great class discussion and then did some cut and paste resources to their meaning. I failed to take a picture of this activity.

Science Strategies: students enjoyed getting their balance on! Students enjoyed activities including balancing a paper butterfly, and using a beam, fulcrum, and unifix cubes to create balance. They discovered that moving the fulcrum was a must when trying to balance cubes that had a lot more on one side than the other. All of our supplies came from our wonderful AMSTI (Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative) kit. We are so blessed to have this resource!! I had planned to let them build mobiles Friday, but we had a 3 hour delay because of expected icing on the roadways. We will just have to pick up next week!
Math Strategies with expanded numbers in math was our focus this week. My student teacher did a fabulous job with a lesson for us this week. She really emphasized standard form and expanded form. With our new common core standards, we are learning more and more how important vocabulary is to our students' understanding. Students are going to see this vocabulary in standardized tests as well as upper grade levels. Students have been building numbers to a thousand all week. Their major problem area has been what to do when they do not have a number in one of the place values such as the tens place. Some students want to leave it blank or put the number for the ones place in the tens place. We have been doing intervention to correct this misconception and as of yesterday, they now seem to be making the connection.

We had our 100th day this week too. So, we had all kinds of math fun with 100. Students drew themselves now and when they are 100, counted by 100 using objects brought from home, wrote 100 words, explained what they would do with $100, showed ways to make $1.00 or 100 cents, and told their favorite 100 things.
Texting Thursday - Reader Leaders - 7 Habits

What is a Reader Leader?

In my classroom a Reader Leader are students who read their Accelerated Reader books on them, test and make 100. I want students reading as much as possible at their independent reading level. I also want them comprehending what they read. So, after students read picture books 3 times, take an accelerated reader test, and make a 100, they get to place a sticker on their Reader Leader chart. Each time they get a line filled, they get a piece of candy from the candy jar. Each time they fill the entire chart, they get to go to the treasure box. This has been a big reading motivation for my students. Students who are reading chapter books get 2 stickers if they make a 100. As students gain more charts, I just place the new one on top of the old and at the end of the year, they get to take their charts home. I also give awards for those charts.

The big chart int the middle is used to record weekly class points, and reading levels. I purchased it from the Accelerated Reader company several years ago.

Why 7 Habits?

At my school this year, we began The Leader in Me program. So, I tied in my title: Reader Leaders to our school theme with the 7 habits in mind. If students are leaders in reading, they can be leaders in all other subjects as well. Miles on their tongue will take them places throughout their lives!

4 Tips on Staying Well this Winter

Keeping a teacher healthy is not always easy, but it makes this teacher happy! Do you remember how sick you became when you first started teaching? Boy do I! I remember a few Christmas vacations in the beginning of my teaching career that lead to bed rest and no family get togethers. So, I thought I might share with you how I now stay well through the winter months. There are a few simple tips that I have learned over the years.

A Healthy Teacher is a Happy Teacher!!!

1) Probably the best tip: Take vitamin C every day! I may go to the extreme, but I take 1000 mg in the morning and 1000 mg at night. It is a vitamin, so what your body doesn't need, it gets rid of. There is no one certain kind to take, but I do love the flavor of the Vitamin C packets.

I also like these other vitamins: D-3, Prenatal - even if you're not planning on you know, and Ultra CoQ10.

A Healthy Teacher is a Happy Teacher - 4 Tips on Staying Well this Winter

2) Get rest, extra if you need it. I try to take a nap on Sunday evenings for sure and other days if I can grab a little snooze, I feel better.
3) Eat veggies and salad. Eating right is not always easy, but if you could just add 1 or 2 different good for you things to your diet each day, think about the difference it would make! I know this sounds corny, but veggies are good for your system. Yes, listen to your mom! Don't forget the water! I carry a 32 ounce jug to school and only drink about 10 ounces while I am at school. Then I chug the rest on the way home. Needless to say, I give the ladies room a workout after school!
4) Exercise - If you can't do a lot - do 15 minutes of walking. I promise, it's not so scary. A little each day gives you extra energy later. I can tell a difference!!
Background

A week ago I purchased the new Surface Tablet from Microsoft. I had been watching the commercials on tv for quite some time and they always got my attention. So, I began some research online to find out more about them. I had been hunting a tablet for a while and thought I would probably go with a different brand until I saw this one.

The keyboard has a second function as a cover for the Surface tablet.

It can be touch screen or easily snap the keyboard in and use the keyboard.

Keyboard is light and thin.

It is easy to carry and hold.

Battery life is good. I used it several days without charging.

You can use Microsoft products easily. They are already installed - Microsoft Powerpoint, Word, and Excel 2013.

It has tons of great magazine articles from your favorite magazines categorized under your News like People, Forbes, US Magazine, Sports Illustrated, and ESPN. There are lots more. I just listed some I really like.

It features Games, a Camera, Music, and Video.

Number Talk

We worked on the thousands place on Friday. We did a number talk to see what students know about 1,000. Students helped me with our anchor chart throughout our discussion. I was excited that the remembered skills that we have covered. They brought in looking at the ones place to determine if the number is even or odd no matter how big the number. They remembered the greater than less than sign. They are beginning to recognize that even though you have a bigger number, you don't forget about the hundreds, tens, and ones.

Place Value to the Thousands

After our Number Talk, I gave students a piece of construction paper and had them fold it hotdog style twice. Then students drew lines down the folds. At the top of each column, I had students write thousands, hundreds, tens, ones. Then I called out different thousand numbers. I emphasized using the comma with the thousand. It was fun to see students start to understand when I would throw a tricky number in with zeros.

If you would like to know more about the Number Talk book, it is a great teacher resource. Number Talks is a great way to incorporate mental math strategies and see your students start to really communicate about what they know.

I know that's weird, but I am a type A personality. There are several steps to the process to ensure the week is going to be up and going by Monday morning.

Here is a list of tasks that must be completed prior to students entering the classroom along with some of my classroom organization supplies:

1) Reading and math work stations must be out along with a rotation chart. My station rotation chart does not change every week. If students seem to be working well together and things are flowing smoothly, I just let them keep the same partners and rotation schedule. If you would like to see my rotation chart, click here to download: Reading Work Station Chart
I also have one for math here: Math Work Station Rotation Chart Students go to a different station each day once they finish their math lesson for the day. I put different games, flash cards, and activities that students can use review their standards.

2) Reading study guide needs to be copied on the back of my weekly newsletter.

3) I have to look at my pacing guide to see what concepts and themes I have planned in my teacher planning calendar for the week. Lesson Plans need to be completed and emailed to my principal, accompanied with state standards. I haven't used a teacher planning book in years. Once I started doing my plans on the computer, I just use that to revise each year and add to. It really helps when you can change the date, adjust your lessons to your kiddos and be done. Of course, I can't do the exact same thing every year. I keep the best lessons and change up to add new and improved. This has worked well for me.

4) Test papers for weekly reading tests need to be copied and placed in Friday's folder and an art or fun activity needs to be planned for students to do when they are finished with testing. This will keep students quiet and engaged while others are given time to finish.

5) Read Alouds need to be planned and put in Monday-Friday folders. This week it will be finishing Stone Fox.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16211054124758491482noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3591387286346503702.post-9124292492084328702013-01-04T01:30:00.000-06:002013-01-04T01:30:01.207-06:00Welcome Back Class - New Year 2013I just can't start the new year off without talking a little about one of my new year's resolutions - getting myself more organized at school and home. Yesterday was our teacher work day at school. I spend every minute, besides a 1 hour faculty meeting, cleaning and organizing my room. I will have to say I made a huge dent. One of my favorite things was getting a 3 week set of files - 3 different colors to help me visually with the weeks. I now can plan up to 3 weeks at a time. This can really help a teacher when getting things copied and ready for the coming weeks. I am still thinking I may add 1 more week. I put these in a handy tub that I can grab and go with if I need to around the classroom. I also tried to help myself out at the end of the day today by filing and putting things back that I used today. The paper trail is so hard to maintain! One day can get you behind!

Another exciting project that my wonderful hubby did for me is paint an old no-back book shelf. I will post pictures this weekend! I'm so excited!!! He put a back on it and painted it black. I'm thinking of transitioning into a black and white color scheme for my classroom and adding some curtains and quotes around the room: Resolution #2!! I'll keep you updated!

Well, we hit the door running this morning. It was a short Christmas break this time - less than 2 weeks. I was a little sad about not getting the customary full 2 weeks off, but then again I was glad that we were starting back with only 2 school days as opposed to a full week. It has given me time to step away from the normal reading routine that takes up the morning and get more creative with my teaching.

Arctic Anchor Chart

Students really enjoyed our lesson this morning about the Arctic. We will have 5 days of in depth study. Today we mostly talked about the climate, location, and what they already know about this region of our earth. We created our anchor chart for day 1. Then I read the fictional book The Little Polar Bear to wrap up the lesson. Students started making real connections even though it was a fictional Arctic story.

7 Habits 7 Goals for the New Year

My second graders absolutely love, love, loved getting to chew gum in class today to go along with their 7 habits display they created today. I made sure they spit it out prior to leaving the room for lunch this morning - trying to avoid any kind of trouble. They had such good responses to each of the 7 habits. I guided the students step by step as they reflected and wrote a resolution with each of the 7 habits. They had a blast!! This is definitely a craftivity I will use again next year.

Blowing Bubbles to ring in the New Year 7 Habits Style!

After lunch, my read aloud was The Snowy Day. Prior to reading, I introduced students to onomatopoeia words. They quickly caught on to this new language concept and enjoyed listening for them when I read The Snowy Day. I had students hold their hands to their face Home Alone style each time they heard and onomatopoeia. Following the story, students wrote connections they made with the story to themselves, another book, and the world. I was amazed at the discussions that took place as students shared their thinking. A lot of students made connections with The Little Polar Bear that I read this morning, even thought that was not something I even thought of when I planned today's lessons.

Our wintry day started and ended great and I can't wait to get on with more fun tomorrow! It sure is fun celebrating in second grade! :)
The PTA at Sandy Hook is collecting student snowflakes to welcome back their students in January. Their Winter Wonderland theme will brighten students' hallways and display areas. They will collect the snowflakes through January 12th. The address for mailing is:
I have been thinking a lot about my students and how we are going to begin New Year 2013 once our Christmas vacation is over. I want students to begin the New Year excited. So, I have come up with 7 ideas to celebrate in second grade once we return. So, here they are: 7 New Year's Ideas for Your Classroom

1) A Snowy New Year - I will use a little snowy science experiment to bring in the new year. It's actually going to snow in our classroom. I will add a picture of video once I locate the snow that I so carefully put away in a place so secret that I forgot where I put it. Teacher amnesia!

2) Snowmen - Students will create a snowman snack to eat with marshmallows, pretzels, a Hershey's kiss, and other candies for a special treat at snack. I used icing to get the candies to stick

Students will add little pom poms to the top of their hats.

3) Students will create party hats showcasing the new date 2013. They will enjoy showcasing these by wearing these to lunch.

New Year's Hat: Students will decorate the blank space in the middle with colored paper and other materials.

Thanks to my trusty Cricut, I have 2013 ready for students to grab and add to their hats.

4) Pass it On - Students will do random acts of kindness throughout the day to celebrate the new year and bring about good cheer and excitement within their classmates and school. Students will write on die-cut hearts and leave them by classroom doors for teachers and students and give them to random strangers and loved ones.

Heart Die Cuts are cut and ready to go for our first day back.
Random Acts of Kindness Hearts

5) Students will continue the wintry SNOW theme by listening to The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats.

6) Pop - Everyone knows you have to have some sound when the clock strikes midnight and the new year begins. Students will Blow bubble gum bubbles (with permission from the principal of course) to create some popping sound. They will then use balloons to begin their writing for the New Year's goals.

Leader in Me School - 7 Habits - 7 Goals

I picked these up at Wal Mart on the Christmas clearance aisle for 50 cents each.

I also found these balloons to use at Wal Mart - 7 cents a pack for 12.

Goals for 2013 - We cannot forget goals! Students will write their goals for the last part of the school year. We will connect it Leader in Me style using the 7 habits. Trying to make the terminology concrete in my students' minds this year is a concentration with this being our school's first year as a Leader in Me School. Click here for Leader in Me 7 Habits - 7 Goals writing paper.

I am fully aware that all of you out there are not Leader in Me schools, so I created 2 more variations that you could use with this same idea. Students could write a how to instructional paragraph on how they blew a bubble. Click here for How to Blow a Bubble writing paper. Once they experiment for a few minutes, they will begin making a class chart verbalizing their first hand information. They will then write their paragraph. Once the final copy is completed, students will blow up balloons to accompany a face to post with their writing. They will also properly dispose of their gum prior to leaving the classroom.

Variation 3 would be to use the writing form New Year's Goals and do it similar to my example in the first picture. Click here for the writing paper to accompany your New Year's Goals lesson.

7) It's time to study time: Students will create a New Year's clock and discuss a.m. and p.m. (real world connection) and create it on a clock.

I did an example and made 4" die cut circles for my students to use.

At the end of the day, there will be one tired teacher and 18 excited students!
We had to catch up in order to finish on time, so we did 3 countries and managed to finish our little booklet up.

Green was the definitely color today. We enjoyed some Grinch fun today after lunch. The kids are so excited that I can hardly get a word in edge-ways (don't know if that's a word or not, but you know what I mean). After reading How the Grinch Stole Christmas, students compared how the Grinch was at the beginning of the story and how he was at the end. Students used their 7 Habits language to tell how the Grinch changed. Students then made an origami Grinch and enjoyed some Grinch punch. It was the quietest they were all day!

Just grab some lime sherbet and Sprite, Twist Up, or 7 Up and you have yourself some good grinch punch!

Don't you just love these little Santa hats! My teacher friend made them up on the spur of the moment this afternoon so they kids would be decked out for the assembly.

We ended the day with a little 7 Habits pep rally with our entire elementary school present. It is so fun to see the students taking such great leadership roles at these early ages. Today was second grade's turn to lead the program and we did 2 Christmas songs - Away in a Manger and Jingle Bells. The kids did great and there is just something special about hearing kids sing Christmas carols. It brings the Christmas spirit right to ya!
Can we say hyper! Boy going to school up until 4 days before Christmas can be wild! The students are so excited they can hardly stand themselves. I have been doing my best to keep them entertained and actively engaged. They could hardly wait for math time to complete their candy cane tasting activity. Students were given 4 different kinds of candy canes to sample. They then decided which candy cane was their favorite. It was hard for some to pick just one, but they managed to decide. Students chose from peppermint, blueberry, cherry, and strawberry. We ended up with a tie between blueberry and strawberry. Students recorded each vote and then graphed the results. Hands-on/mouths-on learning was a total hit!

Tomorrow will be Grinch punch and Grinch writing using the 7 Habits!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16211054124758491482noreply@blogger.com0Blount, AL, USA34.0145152 -86.49965459999998533.1721347 -87.790548099999981 34.856895699999995 -85.20876109999999tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3591387286346503702.post-67020084780286130752012-12-19T16:49:00.000-06:002012-12-19T16:49:34.093-06:00Christmas in Mexico
